Trouble is her intelligence far outweighs mine. Of that I am very sure!
My mind is full of exactly where we went wrong and she subtly got the upper paw?
Our list of woes are too many to go into.
I want help and I WANT it now!
Being a stinking hot bank holiday means people have their own enjoyments, that’s as it should be.
When we do eventually get help from a behaviour specialist, I am inclined to sign up to marriage guidance at the same time.

The bottom line is she is SO worth it although at the mo I am struggling to see it!
She is gorgeous..You will get there in the end ! Just tell her what to do. Yes that sounds easy but know its not. Good luck. She is worth it. I was lucky with my first dog....he was a rescue....aged 5 but had been been well looked after and trained apart from socialising with other dogs. Man owned him...lived in a flat, baby arrived , girlfriend couldn't cope with dog and baby.....probably Dillon only street walked and didn't see other dogs. Had him for 11 years....still cry when I think of when he had to be " put Down". He was very much my dog .
ReplyDeleteEllie has come unwanted from a farm and has had all sorts of ill treatment from shock collars to god knows what else, so no wonder she is afraid of man, especially men! Ted is still the bad guy although at times I inadvertently slip into bad cop in her eyes. Work in progress for me as well as her.

When I was almost ready to despair at the lack of progress with Toby Too's many 'issues' a friend, a real dog-whisperer, suggested that I try training him to do a few simple, and highly-praiseworthy tricks. Easy things like which hand is the treat in? Other times I would get him to sit and watch me put a tiny treat down, making him wait a few seconds before he was allowed to get it, then extending it, Hunt the toy, or I would hide behind a tree then call for him to find me. Silly stuff, but he cottoned on very quickly. I was careful to praise at a level he could handle, too much attention and he got nervous. He loved it. In between times I would continue with all the rest of the training, but the games gave him something else to think about and forged a bit more of the bond between us.
ReplyDeleteYou really will get there, all will be well. She sounds super-smart, which makes things even more difficult. The last bitch I had was a terrier, far smarter than me, which is why I now settle for slightly dumb non-alpha males - and I am talking dogs here!!
Her foster mum has taught her some tricks, which thinking about it I have tried with her and not praised her enough. If you throw her a toy her dives after it gets it then takes it in the flower bed, thus ending the game. Her kong and chewy bone has been buried. A sad mixed up dog who apart from everything else is missing her three crazy spaniel companions in her foster home.
DeleteThis morning I went down and let her out, she came straight back in, I said ‘Do your wee’s!’ she now won’t come in! And it’s only 6.30 am. A good start to the day!

I hope you two work out a compromise; I like to think I am the alpha leader of my pack of two. Pack being me and Bounce, my eight year old wonderful dog I adopted from the shelter.
ReplyDeleteI am sure you are and much loved at that. Rescue dogs are so worth helping, especially with all the pups bred in sad conditions and folk encouraging more demand for the ‘must have’ pooch!

Such a beauty. I know nothing or less about training other dogs, so I can only commiserate. Listen to Elaine, who knows all. It will be well.

ReplyDeleteI think it was the arrival of Billy in the box that after six years without my namesake Lettice, I finally thought now is the time, so thank you for that. Like you I suspect my life just isn’t complete without a dog? Ellie though is taxing us to the max.
