I am rapidly...

morphing into a dotty old dear.

What gives me that idea you might wonder?
I’ve started making chutney.
Wearing a beret, at a jaunty angle I hasten to add.
Donning bigger knickers, much more comfortable, what!
Buying bras without underwires. I fear the next step will be going braless, so much more comfortable, what!
Ditto elastic waistbands.
Sensible shoes, with feet this wide is there any other way?
Comfort is the name of the game.
I let my hair go grey years ago, trouble now is at my last visit to the hairdressers I asked for a bob.  With my chubby cheeks, not sure it is the best look?
At least I don’t need a perm.
For an old dear I am inordinately proud of my wrinkle free neck.  Not so my chin which each morning the passing fishing boats set
their clocks to the sight of me sat plucking out my nine o clock shadow by my bedroom window.  The thing that baffles me is that while my chin gets the distinct look of the bloke on the packet of Senior Service ciggies, my eyebrows grow more sparse by the day?
After all these years I am having to wear reading glasses, until now I have been specs-free.  Not hearing a blooming word, vainly I crowed about not needing spectacles.  Pride goeth before a
fall! Early cataracts lurk.

And another thing I have developed BPPV (vertigo) which is a total pain as yoga triggers it and my weekly class I did reluctantly enjoy.  Now I have a perfect excuse not to go and after all this time of Elizabeth Bott type ‘I don’t want to go!’ I don’t have to and I AM NOT HAPPY!

Is all of this normal of a woman of advancing years?  Trouble is... I don’t want to be NORMAL!

  1. nobody does want most of the effects of ageing!..and hair grows if you don't like the cut!!
Just be positive with what you've got, and "fire away on both cylinders"!!

    1. Yes gz I am positive about the interesting and charmed life I have led. It is just of passing interest to mark the passage of time on the old bod.

  2. Nobody tells you about the hair growing everywhere thing (even the eyebrows in my case).
and as for your last sentence about normal - there's no such thing!

    1. There are just so many things that don’t get passed on by the sisterhood as to what to expect about ageing, just as well really!

  3. Don't give in too easily! My shoulder hurts so much I cannot wear a real bra, with underwires! I'm having my shoulder repaired next week. I have vowed never to wear pants that do not zip--except next week, when I cannot use my arm. I can do nothing about the chin, sadly. Cheers.

    1. Good luck with the repair next week Joanne. A slippery slope... you may find you like the comfort of baggy bottoms!?!

  4. I was proud of my fairly wrinkle free neck...having always moisturised it from an early age, but a while ago I was in the car with 5 yr old grandson waiting as an old white haired old lady with a stick passed slowly in front of us......I said, at least Grandma hasn't got a stick or white hair ( dyed of course!) and his immediate reply was......."no but you have got a wrinkly neck"..and he was sitting behind me at the time too !!
I am falling apart at the moment with GCA ( look it up if you can be bothered) therefore been taking steroids since January, a very sore left knee, and limping makes my thighs and right hip and back hurt too. Well, I think that's why they hurt as well! It doesn't help that I have 2 dogs to walk twice a day, which is normally a daily pleasure.....not so much at the moment. Oh, and I am getting a cataract in my left eye which means I have to keep changing my specs as one eye is getting more and more short sighted and the good one still long sighted
! Now, to add to my angst, there have been strange noises in the hall and the dog is now growling and snorting at the skirting in the hall.....the rats are back
! Other than that I am fine.

  5. PS. I also have a hairy chin and upper lip, and unless I check nearly every day....which I never remember to, I get a horrid shock , thinking, how long have I been walking around like this ..aargh ! Haven't got a beret, and never made chutney. Still in wired bras, but have only worn flat shoes for many years.....the other knee was bad for a long time before I had half knee replacement 8 yrs ago.
My ears are still fine... she said... touching wood !

  6. Oh I'm so glad to hear all this! I had breast cancer a couple of years ago and my hair turned grey when it grew back and it was very short after I'd had it shoulder length most of my life (and blondish). I swore I was going to keep it short as it was a revelation how quickly it dried and I didn't need to faff with it anymore, however as time has gone by I miss my longer hair and find short hair more of a faff if you don't wash it often enough! Now I don't know what to do with my hair. I also had to stop wearing underwires as one gave me a pain which was worrying but thankfully it went after a couple of weeks of wearing no wires. I too wear big girl pants (I love looking at skimpy lacy underwear but cannot be bothered with the discomfort of it all) and flat shoes have been my friend for many years as I am just a tiny bit taller than my husband and when I was younger it embarrased me, I sometimes wear low heels now as I'm not so embarrased anymore! My new old lady thing is making my own soap. I've already done the chutney phase and the jam, I do like homemade jam I have to admit, chutney not so much and my first batch of soap is 'curing' in the back room as we speak! I do wear glasses but not to read except at night when I'm really tired and I don't think I need a hearing aid, though my husband says otherwise sometimes! Perhaps you would enjoy Pilates as I don't think there is as much bending etc as there is in yoga but as I don't attend either I don't really know lol. I'm sure you'll never be 'ordinary' and will wear your big pants, elastic waists, no bra and flat shoes with applomb!! (and a beret) :D xx

    1. Built for comfort not for speed. Trouble with long hair is... it is ageing, trouble with short hair is unless you’ve have a superb cut and the right sort of hair to start with, that can also be ageing!?! As I’ve got older I have tried not to give a fig, a tiny bit of me still does though. And as for opening my mouth and putting my foot in it, that seems to have been a constant in my life. I am trying to stay as sweet as I am... Errrrrrrr!!!!!!?

  7. Oh dear, I can relate to most of this except I do still dye my hair because I don't think it has all gone grey yet, I think it is that horrid salt and pepper colour. Yours looks good. That's a lovely photo.
