Dog days...

There was a dog, a very special girl, who died four years ago.
She left the hugest hole in my heart.

At the time I said to himself not to let me have another dog because I would be constantly comparing.  That wouldn’t be fair.  To be honest until now I haven’t wanted one.  I have kept myself safe by purposefully not having a lot to do with dogs I meet.  That is until now.  Our builder has a Wheaten terrier who at my suggestion comes in after lunch and joins the gang.  He sits by the open door and watches the world wander by.  As he contentedly surveys the scene, I feel my resolve melting.  I have even started making the odd mewing noises about getting another rescue dog.  Trouble is, hubs has only gone and taken my request to heart and is strangely heart hardened about us getting another chum... Buggeration!

  1. My very first dog left me nearly 5 years ago. He was 5 when I had him and around 16 when he had to be " put to sleep". I still cry when I think of him and miss him. I knew that I needed another dog as soon as possible, and I got my gorgeous mini schnauzer pup 2 months later. He is nearly 5 now and I wonder where the time has gone. We love our walks, and he has turned out to be a lovely dog, with few bad habits!. ( I had to have a puppy as by then we had grandkids and needed to know any dog inside out for their safety. ..otherwise it would have been another rescue dog.). My bedroom furniture as a child was limed oak!

    1. The other day I perused the rescue centres, like you do? Trouble with that was, I looked on Gumtree only to find a whippet-type dog who was obviously petrified of whoever was making him sit for the photograph. That image haunts me. I said to the main man, should we go and save this poor dog, to which he replied that that was only one dog, there were thousands of others in the same position. We would only be feeding the greed of breeders to do this again. What could I say to this logic? Not a lot.

    1. Yes, she was, as you and I share the same special love for one particular dog.

Your next comment did make me laugh, do you think I am becoming more mellow with age Elaine? Perish the thought!
