You know how it...

is when a man says

‘I know I’m sticking my nose in but!’

You hold your breath until the pearl of wisdom is imparted.

‘I’ve been thinking!’

All the while with rictus smile stuck on with face paint you think for goodness sake GET ON WITH IT!

Well, you know my cousin from Birmingham and his wife and her daughter and husband are coming on Thursday?’

‘Yes!’

‘I don’t want you overdoing it, with cooking and things.  What had you decided to do?’

‘Do?  I honestly hadn’t given it a thought!’

And I hadn’t!

‘I’m making a stand here!’

he said, overtones of Custer I idly thought.

Opening and closing my mouth like the mackerel that are currently throwing themselves onto the lines of the fisherman all along this part of the coast.  I was lost for words, he was on the phone before I could say
Big Chief Sitting Bull!

‘Hello Hazel, now about this
luncheon, L’s not up to it!?!’

By this time my mouth fell open wide enough to be in serious contention with if not the chunnel the Dartford tunnel at the very least.

‘Because Mum and John aren’t in
the best of health we were only planning on coming for a cup of tea!’

As he put the phone down I thought

Give me strength!

So afternoon tea it will be then.

    1. I suspect you enjoy feeding folk, it’s brings me joy and you too I would imagine? I suppose Freud would have a take on it, am I worried? Not in the least! Your elephant in the room post, comfort eating, my view on that is, don’t beat yourself up about it, you will sort it when the time is right. If it helps you through a tough time, so be it. For the time being, be built for comfort not for speed. Emerge like a butterfly from its chrysalis when the time is right.

  2. Have you read Parsonage Cottage's post today? I don't know her name. I believe from what she says that you are a celebrity chef, so congratulations are in order on your accomplishments. A great achievment!

    1. Elaine, did float it past me before she blew my cover! Hardly a celebrity chef and I ought to say I wouldn’t get on nearly so well on today’s Masterchef. I enjoy food, the planning, the shopping and most importantly the sharing. What better than simple food and folk sat round a table putting the world to rights. A joy!

  4. You will now have to appear all limp and pathetic!

Mind you in this heat that's not hard to do.

Where was that luscious afternoon tea photo - I want one

    1. All it lacks is a glass of bubbles and a good pot of tea.

  5. Afternoon tea, done well, can be just as much work as a lunch, dear girl, as no doubt you know. But at least it can be prepared in advance, which is something. Finger sandwiches (and I don't mean fingers-in-sandwiches, ha ha), light-as-air scones with clotted (it must be clotted!) cream and jam, and then little cakes and/or pastries. Enjoy, as they say. Oh, and congrats on being a celeb. chef! I read that about you, too!!! Your cover is well and truly blown!

    1. Tell me about it! As a chef in a famous household that was the meal of the day in amongst the other three, that I hated the most! I wouldn’t mind but the man set me up for it. As I said to Elaine, he has the cheek of the working class.

  6. Just popped over to Elaine to see what she said about you and Masterchef. I had forgotten that you had been on that! My mind is boggling at cream of lime soup ! It sounds revolting, if you don't mind me saying so? What was in it? I make a delicious spiced carrot and coriander soup...though not recently..much too hot for soup !
I envy you sea breezes in this heat. This front room, south facing with velux windows, was 30c all day yesterday and only cooled to 25c overnight ! Bedroom was 27c when I went up at 10.30, but I took the fan with me! Pills I am on make my head pour with sweat at the least activity.....horrid ! Doesn't do much for my " hairdo" either !! x

    1. The cream of lime soup was a game soup, I used the pheasant stock from the semi final to make it. It had a huge shot of lime in it to cut through the richness. I love devising recipes, some of them don’t see the light of day, mind! Soup in this weather should be called cream of limp!

All doors and windows are open and there is a lovely sea breeze acting as free air con.
