Eyes to the...

right, nose to the left.

I look in mirror and my mother looks back.
Just one glance at the face of my once beautiful mum, would tell you all you needed to know.  In ‘later life’ and there really wasn’t much of it for her, having died at forty eight.  She suffered with depression, the expression... your face is the mirror of your soul
was so true especially for her.

Cleaning my teeth I look and see the strain of this last year writ large. Until recently I have been blessed with not looking my age, and to be honest I haven’t really given it much thought.  Last night there was a woman on the television who was a year younger than me.  Crumbs, I thought she is an old woman!  Is that how people see me?  The face looking back at me this morning gives a
resounding...

YES!

Still we wait for the go ahead.  Packing boxes puntuate our days, creeping ever closer as our life here gets packed away.
Looking out onto a flat calm sea on a beautiful frost bright morning, lots would say you must be mad to go.  Me, I yearn for trees and birds other than gulls, a garden, flowers growing in the ground.  The smell of the seasons.

Maybe today the word will come through?

  1. Hoping with you for the go ahead for your move. We haven't moved for 40 yrs now, and I can't imagine doing it. It would take another 40 to declutter the house for starters!
I try not to look in a mirror these days. I have developed " eye bags" this last year...possibly due to taking steroids for over a year. ( down to 4mg per day
now). A dog walking acquaintance did think I was 6 years younger than I am, and another ( a man about my age) introduced me as his daughter yesterday ! I laughed.....and thanked him for being such a flatterer !

  2. My 'awakening' of looking my age came when I had to apply for a new passport a few weeks ago. It's all done online now so you can take a photograph of yourself on your phone and add it to the application and bob's your uncle. Well, if I tell you there are now 3 million selfies on my phone none of which I'm convinced are me and I also fell out with hubby telling him 'you cannot seem to take a flattering photograph of me'!! I have bags under the bags on my eyes, and my face looks much older than I'm sure it looks in the mirror! Not to mention, I had a great picture in my last passport! I eventually settled on the least bad one and to be fair, the way they attach them to the passport now you're hard pushed to see much of the detail I was dismayed about anyway but it served as a reminder that time is marching on and I need a facelift clearly!

    1. I don’t tend to have my photo taken these days for that very reason. Facelift... never! Be proud, show the world the life you have lived, this worry we all have for looking youthful is a blooming con. I well remember saying to my mum when she must have been all of thirty some, ‘I am so glad I’m not old like you!’ She laughed and replied ‘I am happy with myself as I am!’ I obviously caught her on a good day.

  3. I so seldom look at my face, it doesn't bother me.

  4. I often have the experience of learning that someone I assumed older than me is considerably younger. I truly don't realize how old I appear to others. Very often I'm surprised by my appearance in a mirror or photograph; there's how I imagine I look, and how I actually look. It's been a long road to get here to where I, like your mother, have accepted myself as I am. It's still a shock quite often, but I'm realistic: I don't expect to look 40 when I'm 60, and I don't expect to look 60 when I'm 80. To me it's more important to like myself -- period. Your mom had the right idea. -Kate

  5. Sometimes I see a clear view of me in the mirror and can't believe how old I look. My aunt when she was my age said the same thing, and how inside she felt like she was 20.

  6. I look in a mirror and I see a relatively youthful face smiling back at me. However, on the rare occasion I have dared to try taking a selfie I am aghast at the result. Ah, well.

I have read that selfies actually do distort your face by about 30%, especially those of us who don't have long, long arms. So don't take those selfies seriously! -Kate
